Description

Wisdom in Action is the story of what became of Marie Bernadine Ulbrich’s journey to find a Mission in India where she would be serving “the poorest of the poor.” Marie Bernadine was the only child in her family to leave the farming community where she grew up to further her education at high school and nursing school.
Marie Bernadine realized after several years of serving the poor on Indian reservations in South Dakota that she wanted to join a religious order to work with poor people in India. In 1925, Marie B. Ulbrich traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet Dr. Anna Dengel about a mission to India. After the meeting, Marie Bernadine became Sister Agnes Marie and joined Dr. Dengel along with two of her associates. These four created the Medical Mission Society based on Dr. Dengel’s concept.
The Medical Mission Sisters were the first Religious Society that was comprised of professional health care women. Thus, the plan put forward was considered a “Holy Experiment” within the Catholic circle of societies. After ten years, the Society was deemed to have demonstrated to the Vatican their professional mid-wife practices saved lives of mothers and babies.
Sister Agnes Marie spent many of her years in the United States as the trainer and educator of young women joining the order as postulants to become novices and take vows of poverty before entering into the mission field. She remained in the Medical Mission Sisters until her death in 1987.
